The Science of Flow

5 Lessons

About this course

The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined the term ‘flow’ in 1975 and it has been widely researched since then. Csikszentmihalyi studied flow in a wide variety of occupations, from artists and chess players to business leaders, and from ordinary people to the elite. His research and the research of many others have found that flow is a rewarding experience, it provides the means for people to live up to their potential, and is a predictor of higher performance – or “being in the zone” – in a wide variety of domains from work to leisure to creative pursuits. Flow drives individuals to creativity and outstanding achievement and is the key to living a meaningful life.

Lesson 1

Csikszentmihalyi has characterized flow as “The state in which people are so intensely involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it” (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990, p, 4). In this lesson, we look at how flow appears in our lives and how it benefits us.
